As you may have noticed, I’m a bit of a nerd. One subject I love to geek out about: sex. It’s a taboo subject that’s constantly in our faces, which makes absolutely no sense. We aren’t taught much about it in school or at home so we look to the media for answers, which is such a terrible idea because the way sex is usually portrayed in mainstream movies and shows (and porn, but that’s another conversation) is total bullshit.

So I started an Instagram account where I review sex scenes.

My account breaks a few social media conventions: Post copy is loooooooong, thumbnails aren’t pretty, video clips are grainy (because they’re, um, pirated), and the grid isn’t art directed at all. But people show up anyways. And not just for the boning. Yes, I’m serious.

In its first year, with no paid media support, my account attracted over 10,000 followers (78% women and 22% men, according to IG Insights.) My posts generated thousands of views and lots of healthy discussions about sex in the comments. DMs and audience submissions came rolling in, and surprisingly few were dick pics. Polls and questionnaires in my Stories got hundreds of responses and averaged about a 5-10% engagement rate – not bad for a non-celebrity account, I’m told. I got shoutouts in podcasts and was interviewed by some random French magazine. I even made a short-form podcast of my own.
